The first word means 'important man' and the suffix -berg comes from the Old English beorg. However, the spelling was changed in 1913 following dissatisfaction in the community. Today, the name of this town is more commonly spelled "Gnowangerup."

The name "Jingalup" comes from the aboriginal name "Nulladulla," which means "safe harbour." In 1878, the townsite was gazetted as "Boyup," a place where the Aboriginal people lived. In 1900, a surveyor named it "Boyup" and it was a short while before it was officially gazetted as a town.
