Referring to Operation ELLAMY as "preventing government forces in Libya from carrying out air attacks" would be extremely difficult and incomprehensible. In addition, names are used as a record of the costs and budgets associated with the operation. In 1975, a computerised system was developed by the US Department of Defense to help the military keep track of costs and make it easier to keep track of operations.

In the Korean War, the U.S. launched a counteroffensive, which was named Operation Blue Spoon. Then, they renamed it as Operation White Wing. In the Cold War, U.S.-led operations were nicknamed Inferno and Dragon Fire, and they sent troops on Flip Flop, Hopscotch, and Jingle Bells. The practice of naming military operations is believed to have started during World War I, when Germany began branding missions with mythological titles.
