Sikhs have a long history and are known for their high standards of religious and moral values. These principles are at the heart of their faith. The name Guru Granth Sahib teaches them to be equal to everyone. The name is the first letter of the Sikh Guru. It is not uncommon for males to use their first names and middle names, and females are encouraged to use the same surnames as their male counterparts.

Sikh names have religious meanings. For example, Baljit means "mighty victor." A male Sikh might choose the name Baljit Singh, while a female Sikh might choose Kaur, which means "princess." A Sikh naming ceremony includes a formal ceremony where the family announces the baby's Sikh name at the Gurudwara. The family then spends a few days thinking about the choice and preparing to name the baby. The baby is given a Karah Prasad, a saffron rice cake with sweets, which is also offered to the newborn.
