The desert is cold and lies in Earth's southern polar region. The Arctic Desert, located off the coast of Norway and Russia, is one of the most polar areas on the planet. The Great Artesian Basin is an extremely dry region in Africa. There are no lakes or rivers here, and there is only little rain in the area. Unlike other deserts, however, it is incredibly hot. During the summer months, temperatures are in the eighties, and the Great Artesian Basin receives only about fourteen inches of rain annually. Its sand dunes are the world's longest.
