The Kurdish name has unclear origins, but is most often derived from a toponym. In the Middle Bronze Age, the Assyrian term Qardu (pronounced "kahr-da") refers to the upper Tigris basin. The name was adopted in Classical Arabic as 'Gudi', and re-adapted in Kurdish as 'Cudi'. In Greek history, the tribe was referred to as the Corduene, and was a strong opponent of the Islamic invasion.

The origin of the Kurdish name is murky. However, it has been recorded in the Assyrian and Middle Bronze Age as 'Qardu'. These names, which refer to the upper Tigris basin, were not accepted in the Middle Ages, and were later re-adopted in Kurdish as 'Cudi'. Xenophon mentions a tribe called the Corduene that opposed the Ten Thousand retreat.

Before the reforms of Kemal Attaturk, the Kurdish people in Turkey were not allowed to speak their own language or carry their own Kurdish names. Today, they are permitted to use their own languages, but they are restricted to the Turkish alphabet for spelling.
