Our Milky Way galaxy is a band of light that we can see from Earth. The name of the galaxy is quite ancient. It is derived from the Latin Via Lactea, which means "pale band of light," and is derived from Greek Galaxias, which means "the hazy, blue region." From Earth, we can see the Milky Way as a disk, but from within, it looks like a band of light. From space, the Milkyway is a hazy, disk-shaped structure. In 1610, Galileo Galilei resolving this light into individual stars began to observe the stars in the galactic plane. In 1929, Edwin Hubble observed the Pale Band of Light and was the first to study it. You've probably seen images of galaxies, but you may not have noticed them. The Milky Way is the most famous, with more than a billion stars and hundreds of billions of stars. You can see it with your naked eye in the southern hemisphere. Other prominent galaxies include the Andromeda Galaxy, M87, the Small Magellanic Cloud, the Large Magellanic Cloud, the Sombrero Galaxy, and the Large Magellanic Cloud.
