Panda Name Quiz

Welcome to the panda name quiz. If you're a panda lover, then you have surely heard of Gu (the giant panda born in Wolong National Nature Reserve in China), and the infamous panda Pan (who died in 2016). You might have also heard of Zi Bo (meaning "white jasmine") and Ming (meaning "smart"). If you've been to the National Zoo in Washington, DC, you may have even seen Bei, a young panda featured in US-China panda diplomacy.

The names of red pandas have a lot of history. After all, they are cute creatures! The Chinese used to call them "Bao Bao" (meaning "treasured gift") and "Pochoo" (meaning cuddle buddy). However, the modern name for a panda is Mei Xang, after a famous giant panda in Beijing's panda conservatory. These names are very cute, but they are also wildly popular and have a lot of meaning.

Did you know that the first giant panda was a boy named Ling-Ling? This little guy was given to the United States in 1989, and has been named after him ever since. His mother, Mei Xiang, is the oldest panda in North America. Another cute name for a panda is Pochoo, which means treasured gift in Chinese.
