This large grant of land extended from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, and was called a plantation by its inhabitants. Even personal grants from individual landowners were called "plantations."

In the late nineteenth century, the word was used to refer to a large area of land. The eight Lords of Carolina would refer to their expansive grant of land as a "Plantation of Carolina." Their landholdings spread from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Later, individual landowners would refer to their personal grants as a plantation, as well.
